London Symphony Orchestra - Creative Days for Teachers

A selection of CPD days for primary teachers from LSO

Composing in the Classroom – Monday 28 November 2016, LSO St Luke’s
Follow-up Session and LSO evening concert*: Wednesday 14 December, Barbican Centre
(*Featured repertoire: Ravel La Valse, Shostakovich Violin Concerto No 1, Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition)

Throughout the day, you will take part in a series of composition workshops looking at different techniques and ways to explore a classical piece of music by re-composing it with children, such as:

• Tell a story through music (Programmatic composition)
• Examine the composition techniques used by the featured composer, breaking the piece down into three musical ideas to use in composing the group’s own “version” of the original (Absolute composition)
• Explore common musical forms used in classical music which can be used to structure class pieces, for example, March, Waltz and Sonata.

Listen and Compose – Monday 27 February 2017, LSO St Luke’s
Follow-up Session and LSO evening concert*: Thursday 23 March, Barbican Centre
(*Prokofiev Overture on Hebrew Themes, Shostakovich Cello Concerto No 1, Ravel Daphnis and Chloe)

Explore strategies for listening to and appraising classical music with your class, taking these skills into creating your own class compositions, and using non-traditional notation (written music) to develop and remember class compositions.
